15 Oct '05 - + 16 - 21 Scandinavian Adventure
Since Jenny's job finished last week, we decided to go to a nearby
country we'd missed so far: Denmark. We'd been within five miles
of Denmark a couple times (in Flensberg and Sylt), but we hadn't quite
made it. With a little extra time, we made a run for a couple
nights in Copenhagen, and threw in a night in Sweden just for fun.
The biggest impression of Scandinavia is that it is
expensive.
Copenhagen has to be 40-60% more expensive than Germany on
average. A mediocre Indian buffet for two with a bottle of bad
wine was $50. A Big Mac meal was $7. A cheap hotel room was
$100/night. We'd like to go back to see more of both Denmark and
Sweden (we didn't stray far from Copenhagen on either side of the
border), but it's so expensive that we probably won't return for a long
trip.
That's not to say that we lived or ate poorly. We had wonderful
herring, seafood pasta salads, wine, and passable Mexican (much better
than we've had in Germany). We saw beautiful castles left over
from the days that the Danish kings were absolute monarchs, rode free
bicycles through the streets of Copenhagen, and enjoyed the views from
ferries that travel frequently between castle-crowned cities.
It was a short, fun, and expensive trip.
