About

This is Lance Finney's blog. It's part of my Europe Travelogue site. There you can find out a lot more about me

What I've Read Recently

+ 13 - 24 | § Poland and Slovakia

We're going to leave Bratislava, Slovakia soon.  We're taking a train to Belgrade, Serbia (via Vienna) in a couple hours, so I have some time to talk about our few days each in Poland and Slovakia.

+ 15 - 17 | § Auf Wiedersehen, Deutschland

We're less than six hours from ending our time living in Germany.  We'll take a night train tonight to Warsaw, then continue on to Krakow, Bratislava, Belgrade, Zagreb, Ljubljana, and Rome over the next couple weeks.  We'll then return to America on a cruise ship.  So, we're far from being home (29 days away), but this chapter of our lives is about closed.

We've sent some stuff home with family, some ahead to Rome, some home by FedEx, give some away to friends here.  The fridge is empty, and the apartment looks bare.

It's time to go.

I'll try to post occasionally over the next few weeks, but there's no guarantee that I'll have enough time at internet cafes to say what I want to say, and even less chance that I'll be able to share pictures.

See you soon.

+ 26 - 13 | § Hamburg, Berlin, and Bremen

My parents left this morning after having spent a week with us.  It was great to see them, to catch up on stories, to play Pinochle with them, and to get their help carrying things back to the States.  While they were here, we showed them three cities: Hamburg, Berlin, and Bremen.

+ 12 - 22 | § Fußball!!

This afternoon, Jenny and I went to our first Bundesliga game, Hamburg SV vs. VfL Wolfsburg.  Hamburg SV is one of the better teams in Germany, but we haven't really been following them.  We're not die-hard fans, but I wanted a chance to experience top-level soccer in the stadium.  It was quite an experience.

+ 16 - 21 | § Scandinavian Adventure

Since Jenny's job finished last week, we decided to go to a nearby country we'd missed so far: Denmark.  We'd been within five miles of Denmark a couple times (in Flensberg and Sylt), but we hadn't quite made it.  With a little extra time, we made a run for a couple nights in Copenhagen, and threw in a night in Sweden just for fun.

+ 20 - 11 | § The Future Coming Into Focus

When Jenny and I started our little adventure in Germany, we didn't know how long we'd be here.  Six months?  Twelve months?  Indefinitely?  Now we have our answer: we will leave Hamburg in three weeks and return to St. Louis on Thanksgiving (November 24).  Jenny's job here ends this Friday, and then we have an amazing seven weeks of freedom.

+ 18 - 18 | § Seasons Change with the Scenery

Autumn is a definite force this far north.  We enjoyed daylight past 10pm in June, but now we have to turn the lights on before 5pm.  The leaves have started to change colors, and the temperatures have dropped sharply.  Last week, Hamburg saw nothing but chilly rain.  There are fewer people riding their bikes or walking around the lake, and the heavy coats are coming out.

It's been about three weeks since I've blogged about life here.  We haven't gone anywhere too exciting in that time, but we have seen a bit more of the area and seen some of the changes.
